The merge
On October 1st an orange fog rolled in. A glowing pumpkin rolled downhill, straight into Phil's right jab. Flash. Phil was still punching, still expressionless. But his head was now a carved pumpkin. Wearing a blonde bob.

The ghosts arrive
The curse: for 31 nights the spirits of the town would try to scare him. One flinch and he stays a pumpkin forever. Le Ghost of FUD whispered rumors. The Bats of Liquidity circled. A skeleton tried a jump scare from behind a bin. Philloween does not have eyelids.

The town joins in
People gathered on the road at midnight. Someone brought a speaker, someone brought candy, then everyone started shadowboxing with frozen faces. Every jab pushed the fog back. They called it Trick or Jab.
05CHAPTER
October 31st
The Great Gourd rose from the fog and roared. Philloween raised his fists and threw one slow, deadpan jab. The Gourd stared for a long time, said "...respect" and dissolved into orange glitter. He kept the pumpkin head anyway. It suited him.
